The Wii U now supports a different type of surround sound called LPCM. My SNES has a coaxial output, my Wii U doesn't...should we take issue over that? You receiver or dvd player then convert that back to LPCM to send to your speakers. New to Wii U?

When storing sound on a DVD, space is saved by compressing this audio to DD or DTS, which are lossy compression somewhat like mp3.
