Even two brand new pairs of batteries that I grabbed happened to be faulty.... then while its flashing press the red button on ur wii console, open the flap under the reset button to find it. To re-calibrate the remote, place it on a table button side down for 10 seconds. simply press A to get into the Wii home menu, and do what you like! check over here

When you first get your wii, you should already have read in the manual that you should synch the remote. These settings are normally in an 'options' menu, either on the title screen or when you pause the game. Press the aforementioned red “SYNC” button once again. Thanks R Deckard for pointing this out.

I don't have Wii U, but using the attachments such as the steering wheel for the regular wii doesn't work because it can't sensor it, therefore, if resetting the wii doesn't I've tried plugging in an entirely different Wii system as well.
